Also naming 5th Street between Cantrell Street and Snyder Avenue as "Rev. Enos Mackey Way".

WHEREAS, Enos Mackey was born to Oscar K. and Lula Mackey on September 28, 1893, in Glenwood Georgia; and

WHEREAS, He joined the Starlight Missionary Baptist Church and was baptized at an early age. As a young man, he worked faithfully in the Church Sunday School and in the Church Choir; and

WHEREAS,

He met and married Avia Ryals, of Uvalda, Georgia on October, 24, 1915. Their union was blessed with the births of their children Ada M. and Oscar K. Mackey

;

and

WHEREAS, After working as a farmer, he found it very difficult to financially support a family the way he desired and therefore migrated to Philadelphia in 1923 seeking other employment

; and

WHEREAS,

Shortly after arriving in Philadelphia, Enos found employment in the housing trade. He was later employed at the Philadelphia Naval Base where he worked until his retirement in 1955; and

WHEREAS,

When Enos first came to Philadelphia, he joined the Shiloh Baptist Church and later joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church

; and

WHEREAS,

Enos was called to preach in 1925, but was not given the opportunity as he desired. He then joined, was licensed, and ordained at the Emanuel Baptist Church under the Pastorate of Reverend Caleb Richardson, who gave him the opportunity to pursue his calling; and

WHEREAS,

In 1927, Enos joined the Little David Baptist Church where he worked diligently. In 1937 he had a vision of starting a church. On the first Sunday in June 1938, his vision was fulfilled with the founding of the Mt. Enon Baptist Church, where he worked faithfully as Founder and Pastor for over forty years; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Mackey retired in 1978 as Pastor of the Mt. Enon Baptist Church and was elevated to the office of Pastor Emeritus; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Mackey often graced the pulpit admonishing the members “Little Children Love Ye One Another”. Some of his favorite songs were: “Life is Like a Mountain Railroad”, “Blessed Assurance”, “Lord I Want to Live for Thee” and Mt. Enon’s theme song “Bright Crown”; and

WHEREAS, On November 17, 1984, Pastor Emeritus, Enos Mackey was called from labor to reward. Funeral Services were held at Mt. Enon Baptist Church on Friday, November 23, 1984 and a final tribute was held at the Starlight Baptist Church in Glenwood, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, although Reverend Mackey’s voiced has been hushed, the sermons he preached and the spiritual advice he has given to all of us at one time or another shall long be remembered in our hearts and minds; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That 5th Street between Cantrell Street and Snyder Avenue shall henceforth be known as “Rev. Enos Mackey Way”.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the congregation of the Mt. Enon Baptist Church, as evidence of the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
