WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Phillies won the 2022 National League Championship on October 23, 2022 by defeating the San Diego Padres four games to one; and
WHEREAS, Phillies superstar Bryce Harper hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Phillies a 4-3 victory; and
WHEREAS, Besides the Padres, the Phillies previously defeated the St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves in the their World Series run and the Phillies will now take on the Houston Astros in the World Series beginning on Friday, October 28, 2022; and
WHEREAS, The Phillies are led by National League home run champ Kyle Schwarber, superstar Bryce Harper, clutch first baseman Rhys Hoskins, and pitching aces Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola, and managed by Rob Thomson; and
WHEREAS, The Phillies have won two World Series championships, the first against the Kansas City Royals in 1980 and the second against the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008. The Phillies have also won eight National League pennants, the first of which came in 1915, and have made fifteen total playoff appearances in 118 seasons; and
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Phillies were on fire during the playoffs, and Philadelphia City Council is sure that the team will be victorious in the 2022 World Series. Therefore, Philadelphia City Council is wagering a bet that will include Philadelphia’s nationally renowned cheesesteaks, pretzels, and Tastykakes to be sent to Houston City Council in the unlikely event that the Phillies lose the World Series; and now therefore be it,
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby honors the Philadelphia Phillies for winning the 2022 National League Championship and challenges Houston City Council to a bet that the Phillies will defeat the Astros in the 2022 World Series, and wishes the Phillies the best of luck, not that they need it.
