Full Bill

WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is one of the most significant holidays celebrated by millions of people around the world, symbolizing the beginning of the lunar year; and

WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia proudly embraces its diverse population and recognizes the importance of cultural celebrations in fostering unity, understanding, and appreciation among its residents; and

WHEREAS, The Asian American community in Philadelphia has made significant contributions to the cultural, social, and economic fabric of our City, enriching our neighborhoods and enhancing our collective identity; and

WHEREAS, The festivities surrounding the Lunar New Year, including vibrant parades, traditional lion and dragon dances, culinary delights, and family gatherings, provide opportunities for residents and visitors alike to experience and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the many communities that celebrate Lunar New Year; and

WHEREAS, Saturday, February 10, 2024, will mark the beginning of the “Year of the Dragon”; and

WHEREAS, The City Council of Philadelphia acknowledges the importance of recognizing and honoring the traditions and customs of all its residents, including those who celebrate Lunar New Year, as part of its commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and cultural appreciation throughout the City; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, hereby honors and celebrates the Lunar New Year, extending warm wishes for prosperity, happiness, and good fortune to all residents who participate in the festivities; and

FURTHER RESOLVED, The City Council encourages residents to join in the celebration of the Lunar New Year, participating in events and activities that promote cultural understanding, unity, and mutual respect among all members of our community.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the Northeast Philadelphia Development Cooperation, the Sunshine Youth Activity Center, and the Chinese Benevolent Association of Greater Philadelphia as evidence of the admiration and respect of this body.
