Full Bill

WHEREAS, The Lindback Award for Distinguished Teachers recognizes sixty educators from the School District of Philadelphia each year. The award celebrates teachers who demonstrate excellence in the classroom and beyond by promoting transformative learning and changing the lives of the youngest Philadelphians; and

WHEREAS,

Ms. Luz was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico. At the age of 17, she moved with her family to the United States with the simple goal of learning and growing. She bravely navigated the challenges of learning a new language and adapting to a different culture and environment. She completed her high school education at Eau Gallie High School in Florida; and

WHEREAS, She is a proud graduate of Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, with a degree in Special Education and a minor in Spanish. She is a dedicated Spanish teacher at Olney High School in the 9th Councilmanic District; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Luz is one of sixty teachers in Philadelphia this year who have been recognized by the Lindback Foundation for her exceptional work in transforming the lives of students in Olney. Her commitment to her students and families extends beyond the classroom, as she also serves as the Olney Love Liaison and 11th Grade Advisory Lead; and

WHEREAS, In 2020, amidst the pandemic, she created a classroom within her home and launched a school Instagram account. Her dedication kept her students engaged and entertained, sending thoughtful gifts and providing a safe space even through virtual calls. Furthermore, she secured funding for headphones and school supplies, ensuring all her students had the tools for successful online learning. Additionally, she established a safety station outside the school, enabling students to access essential items; and

WHEREAS,

Philadelphia educators such as Ms. Luz are shaping the future of our City by inspiring our youth to strive for a brighter tomorrow. Through her guidance, she imparts not only knowledge but also invaluable life lessons, encouraging us all to overcome obstacles and keep moving forward; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, We recognize and congratulate Olney High School teacher Luz Marcela Alva de la Rosa for being honored with the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation’s Award for Distinguished Teachers.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Luz Marcela Alva de la Rosa, further evidencing this legislative body's sincere admiration and respect for her outstanding achievement.
