Honoring and recognizing places of importance in Philadelphia's Black history during Black History Month for their contributions to the community and efforts in preserving history.

WHEREAS, Black History Month is a dedicated time for education, reflection, and recognition of the contributions, struggles, and triumphs of Black individuals and communities throughout history. In Philadelphia, many significant places serve as cultural and historical landmarks, preserving the legacy of African American culture and providing spaces for education and reflection. The Council of the City of Philadelphia comes together to honor these living landmarks for their lasting contributions to the Black community; and

WHEREAS, The Belmont Mansion in Fairmount Park is a historic site that honors Philadelphia's Black history. Once home to abolitionist and educator Rebecca Cole, one of the first African American women to earn a medical degree, the mansion commemorates the contributions of African Americans in the fight for freedom and equality. It stands as a symbol of resilience and empowerment in the city's rich cultural heritage; and

WHEREAS, The Blockson Collection at Temple University is committed to preserving and showcasing African American history, art, and culture through its exhibits and educational programs, educating the public on the contributions of the Black community to the nation’s history. Founded by Charles Blockson, the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection at Temple is one of the most prestigious collections of African American artifacts in the U.S. The collection houses over 500,000 items relating to the global Black experience. Located in Sullivan Hall; and

WHEREAS, The Lest We Forget Museum is dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the African American experience. The museum highlights the struggles and achievements of Black Americans, particularly during slavery and the Civil Rights Movement. Through powerful exhibits and educational programs, it honors the resilience and contributions of African Americans to the nation's history, ensuring that their stories are never forgotten; and

WHEREAS, The African American History Museum in Philadelphia celebrates the rich cultural heritage and contributions of African Americans. Through engaging exhibits and educational programs, the museum highlights key moments in Black history. It serves as a powerful space for reflection, understanding, and honoring the enduring impact of African Americans on the nation’s history and culture; and

WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Tribune, established in 1884, is the oldest continuously published African American newspaper in the United States. Located on S 16th Street, the Tribune has played a pivotal role in documenting and advocating for the rights and achievements of Black Philadelphians. Over the years, the Tribune has been a vital platform for social, political, and cultural commentary, amplifying the voices of the African American community and contributing to the ongoing fight for justice and equality. It remains a key institution in Philadelphia's Black history; and

WHEREAS, These places represent the resilience, achievements, and struggles of the Black community and remain vital to the ongoing celebration and preservation of African American culture; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors Belmont Mansion, The Blockson Collection at Temple University, The Lest We Forget Museum, The African American Museum in Philadelphia, and The Philadelphia Tribune for their invaluable contributions to the African American community, urging all residents to support and reflect on these institutions during Black History Month and beyond, as they continue to educate and inspire future generations.
