Honoring and Celebrating Beyond the Bars on the Occasion of Their 10th Anniversary for Their Dedication to Empowering Philadelphia's Youth Through Music, Leadership, and Community Engagement

Full Bill

WHEREAS, Beyond the Bars was founded on March 16, 2015, with the mission to provide music education and leadership opportunities to system-impacted youth, beginning with its first music lesson inside a correctional facility; and

WHEREAS, Beyond the Bars has grown from a small, volunteer-run program to a transformative organization that has empowered thousands of young people across Philadelphia by creating spaces for healing, creativity and advocacy; and

WHEREAS, Over the past ten years, Beyond the Bars has established 55 music labs throughout the city, graduated 75 student teachers, and mentored over 800 new students, fostering leadership, resilience and artistic expression among Philadelphia’s youth; and

WHEREAS, Beyond the Bars has remained steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that young people, particularly those impacted by incarceration and systemic barriers, have access to music education as a tool for empowerment and community transformation; and

WHEREAS, Through the dedication of its staff, volunteers, students, and community partners, Beyond the Bars has provided opportunities for leadership development, with students actively organizing food drives, building music labs and transitioning into adult educators; and

WHEREAS, Beyond the Bars has played a vital role in addressing social and educational inequities by advocating for youth-driven solutions, fostering community partnerships and replacing broken systems with innovative, community-led alternatives; and

WHEREAS, The organization’s impact extends beyond music education, fostering a culture of mentorship, advocacy, and social change that has strengthened neighborhoods and provided opportunities for young people to thrive; and

WHEREAS, As Beyond the Bars celebrates its 10th anniversary, it is fitting that the City of Philadelphia recognizes and honors this remarkable organization for its unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and community enrichment; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, hereby honors and celebrates Beyond the Bars on the occasion of their 10th anniversary, commending their extraordinary contributions to the city and their dedication to uplifting and inspiring Philadelphia’s youth through music and leadership.
