WHEREAS,
This April will mark the 20th anniversary of the Carpe Diem event hosted by the Juvenile Justice Service Center School (JJSCS). This program was born in 2005 under the leadership of former Principal Margaret Holloman. Its inception created a unique experience for the JJSCS students to connect with Judges of Color. The judges impart a wealth of legal knowledge to the students surrounding courtroom etiquette and courtroom expectations; and
WHEREAS,
The JJSCS students get the chance to interact and engage with judges in a setting that fosters community and learning and allows them to engage in discussions that align with their respective interests. Participants at the Juvenile Justice Service Center School are grateful to the committed judges for their years of involvement and support of the JJSCS youth; and
WHEREAS, In
2012 Deana Ramsey took over as principal and inherited this wonderful program. With each bi-annual event, Principal Ramsey provides the judges with a relevant discussion topic. In years prior students have engaged in discussions about “Voting: the power of your vote and your voting right”. The program is equally as enjoyable and educational for both parties. At the close of each session, the judges and students find it difficult to part; and
WHEREAS,
We would especially like to thank the Honorable Judge Ida Chen, who has been the driving force behind this event for the past 20 years. The Carpe Diem Program has been meticulously planned and coordinated by Judge Chen. More than twenty judges have taken part in this significant program thus far, which has benefited all the JJSCS students; now, therefore, be it
