Full Bill

WHEREAS, George Lane, an intern in Councilmember Thomas’ office and a first-generation college student who has always been deeply committed to service and leadership, will be attending Temple University to pursue a pre-medicine track. Lane’s passion for improving the lives of others and his dedication stem from the trauma of losing an older brother to gun violence, which motivated him to begin social action advocacy. Another loss, of an old brother due to cancer, guided his passion for becoming an oncologist; and

WHEREAS, Brandon Chiu, also a first-generation college student, is attending Cornell University to major in human development on the pre-medicine track. Chiu witnessed that language barriers, immigration status, and systemic inequities limit access to quality healthcare in minority communities. Chiu has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to serving others and addressing healthcare inequities through his service as president of the Charity Club and volunteering at a nonprofit clinic; and

WHEREAS, Denisia George, born in Sierra Leone, will attend the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in neuroscience and minoring in sociology. George aspires to become a doctor, using her science and social awareness knowledge to address healthcare disparities and advocate for underserved communities. George's journey reflects a deep commitment to improving healthcare access and outcomes for those in need; and

WHEREAS, these three students will make Philadelphia history as they are all students at the School District of Philadelphia’s Academy of Palumbo, receiving the Gates scholarship; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and congratulates George Lane, Brandon Chiu, and Denisia George for their dedication and commitment to their education and improving their communities.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That Engrossed copies of this Resolution be presented to George Lane, Brandon Chiu, and Denisia George as a symbol of this Council’s deep appreciation and admiration for their success and continued excellence.
