WHEREAS, Overbrook School for the Blind, founded in 1832, has served as a national model for excellence in education for students who are blind or visually impaired, providing instruction, skills training, and opportunities that empower independence; and

WHEREAS, The School’s work extends far beyond its Philadelphia campus, through outreach, consultation, and professional development initiatives that enhance the capacity of educators and service providers across the Commonwealth and beyond; and

WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia recognizes the importance of increasing public understanding of blindness and visual impairment, promoting accessibility, and ensuring equitable opportunities for individuals with vision loss; and

WHEREAS, October is observed as Vision Awareness Month, offering a vital opportunity to highlight programs, resources, and innovations that support the blind and visually impaired community; and

WHEREAS, Overbrook School for the Blind’s “Taking Flight” campaign exemplifies this commitment by expanding access to assistive technologies, increasing professional development in the field of vision education, and investing in cutting-edge instructional approaches; and

WHEREAS, By advancing educational opportunity, fostering inclusion, and leveraging technology to break down barriers; Overbrook School for the Blind continues to lead the way toward a more accessible future; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That October be recognized as Vision Awareness Month in the City of Philadelphia, and that Council honors Overbrook School for the Blind’s enduring leadership and innovation in vision education.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to Overbrook School for the Blind in recognition of its service and contributions to the blind and visually impaired community.
