WHEREAS, The Council of the City of Philadelphia is pleased and proud to recognize SELF Incorporated (Strengthening and Empowering Lives and Futures), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing emergency housing, supportive services, and pathways to stability for individuals and families experiencing homelessness; and

WHEREAS, SELF Inc. was established in 1982 by Dr. Sylvester Outley, a visionary leader and advocate whose mission was to eradicate homelessness by meeting people where they are and supporting them with compassion, dignity, and care; and

WHEREAS, Over the past four decades, SELF Inc. has grown to become the largest provider of emergency and temporary housing in Philadelphia, serving more than 1,000 individuals daily through its network of shelters, supportive housing programs, and outreach services; and

WHEREAS, SELF Inc. has long been recognized for its commitment to ending homelessness through innovative, trauma informed programming that addresses the underlying causes of housing insecurity and promotes holistic wellbeing for residents; and

WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Board Chairman Rev. Dr. W. Wilson Goode, Sr. and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Shirlana Dash, SELF Inc. continues to expand its impact through the development of permanent supportive housing programs, youth focused initiatives, and specialized outreach teams including a newly established outreach program at the Philadelphia International Airport; connecting unsheltered individuals to critical care and housing resources; and

WHEREAS, Through partnerships with the City of Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and numerous community organizations, SELF Inc. plays an integral role in advancing the City’s efforts to provide equitable access to housing, employment, and supportive services for vulnerable populations; and

WHEREAS, During National Homeless Awareness Month, the Council of the City of Philadelphia acknowledges the unwavering dedication of SELF Inc.’s staff, leadership, and partners whose work embodies the principles of dignity, compassion, and justice for all Philadelphians; and

WHEREAS, SELF Inc.’s legacy of service spanning over forty years continues to strengthen communities, empower lives, and transform futures through its belief that every person deserves not only a safe place to call home but also the opportunity to thrive;

now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That this esteemed body honors and recognizes SELF Incorporated for its transformative leadership, tireless advocacy, and enduring commitment to serving the unhoused and underserved across our great City.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to SELF Inc. in grateful acknowledgment of its service and impact, with the sincere admiration and appreciation of this legislative body.
