WHEREAS, Lent is a solemn religious observance in the Christian tradition, beginning on Ash Wednesday and continuing for forty days, commemorating the forty days Jesus Christ spent fasting in the wilderness; and
WHEREAS, During Lent, many Christians engage in prayer, fasting, repentance, charitable giving, and acts of service as a means of spiritual renewal and preparation for Easter; and
WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia is home to a diverse and vibrant Christian community, including Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, and other denominations, whose congregations contribute meaningfully to the civic, charitable, and spiritual life of the City; and
WHEREAS, Faith-based institutions throughout Philadelphia provide essential services during Lent and throughout the year, including food distribution, housing support, youth programming, addiction recovery services, and community organizing efforts; and
WHEREAS, The observance of Lent calls upon individuals and communities to confront injustice, to care for those who are poor and marginalized, and to commit compassion and mercy; and
WHEREAS, At a time when many families across the United States face food insecurity, healthcare instability, and economic hardship, the Lenten commitment to fasting and almsgiving underscores the moral imperative to ensure that no neighbor goes hungry or without medical care; and
WHEREAS, As communities nationwide grapple with the humanitarian and moral consequences of immigration enforcement actions that separate families and create fear among immigrant neighbors, the Lenten call to welcome the stranger and protect the vulnerable resonates with urgency; and
WHEREAS, Across the globe, ongoing humanitarian crises including genocide, armed conflicts, displacement of refugees, famine, and natural disasters remind us of our shared humanity and the need for solidarity beyond borders; and
WHEREAS, The beginning of Lent offers an opportunity for reflection not only within individual faith communities but also within civic life, encouraging renewed commitments to justice, equity, and care for neighbors; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes the beginning of the Lenten season, a sacred period of reflection, prayer, fasting, and service observed by millions of Christians in Philadelphia and throughout the world.
