WHEREAS, Women in Construction (WIC) Week was created by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), to highlight women as a viable component of the construction industry and emphasize the growing role of women in the industry. NAWIC has been a nationwide leader in advocacy for WIC since 1960. Their goal through WIC Week is to amplify, educate, and inspire current and future generations of women to join an
d
excel in the construction trades; and
WHEREAS, Women in Nontraditional Careers (WINC) is a multi-stakeholder regional collaboration led by Philadelphia Works that includes community colleges, apprenticeship and training programs, employers, industry and union representatives, non-profit and governmental agencies, and most importantly, women working in manufacturing, construction, utilities and transit; and
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Chapter of Professional Women in Construction (PWC) was formed in 2018 to provide a platform to connect and engage across the construction industry, expanding the business network and career opportunities of women in construction across the greater Philadelphia area; and
WHEREAS, National Association of Black Women in Construction (NABWIC) helps build lasting partnerships with top organizations to create productive solutions for Black women in their respective construction fields. Their advocacy for Black women-owned construction makes them an immensely impactful partner in the construction space; and
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO fights for social and economic justice for all working people in Philadelphia. The Council is comprised of over 100 local labor unions, representing more than 150,000 workers employed in building and construction trades, public, and private sectors. They advocate for greater and, more equitable opportunities for women in the building and construction trades, transit, and manufacturing industries; and
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Building & Construction Trades Council is an umbrella organization for more than fifty-member local unions that work in the construction industry in the Greater Philadelphia region. They work with their member organizations to expand opportunities for women to find family-supporting and sustaining careers in the trades; and
WHEREAS, WIC Week in Philadelphia honors NAWIC, WINC, PWC, NABWIC, Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO, and the Building Trades Council for their commitment to support, increase, and advance the participation of women in construction careers in the Philadelphia region. NAWIC, WINC, PWC, NABWIC, Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO, and the Building Trades Council serve as voices for women in a field where they are drastically underrepresented. Their ability to connect women with information, education, and resources is vital in ensure that women have pathways to careers, job security, and opportunities for advancement; and
WHEREAS, NAWIC, WINC, PWC, NABWIC, Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO, and the Building Trades Council together have the unique ability to assist in changing how the industry views and accepts women into these career paths. Recognizing that talent is gender neutral, and that women bring many distinctive and exceptional traits to the industry, they have committed to ensuring that women have access to opportunities that meet the growing demand for workers in construction, manufacturing, utilities, and transit careers; now, therefore, be it
