WHEREAS, The City Council of Philadelphia takes great pride in recognizing student-athlete who embody the spirit of perseverance, discipline, and excellence, representing the heart and hustle of our City on the Commonwealth’s biggest stage; and

WHEREAS, Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School, a proud and enduring institution grounded in the principles of scholarship, leadership, and cultural awareness, has long been an integral part of the 7th District, serving as a pillar of opportunity and empowerment while shaping generations of students to excel both academically and within their communities; and

WHEREAS, Building on this strong foundation, the Sankofa Freedom Academy Warriors Boys’ Basketball Team has emerged as a powerful reflection of the school’s values in action, demonstrating discipline, resilience, and unity throughout their season while bringing pride and recognition to their school community and the City of Philadelphia; and

WHEREAS, On March 19, 2026, the Sankofa Freedom Academy Warriors reached the pinnacle of Pennsylvania high school sports by capturing the PIAA Class 1A Boys’ Basketball State Championship with a hard-fought victory over Neighborhood Academy at the Giant Center in Hershey; and

WHEREAS, The Warriors were led by standout senior Nafis Dubose, whose championship performance capped off a legendary career as the all-time leading scorer in Sankofa Freedom Academy history, cementing his legacy as one of the program’s most impactful players; and

WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Head Coach Isaiah Thomas, this group of young men played with heart and unity, securing the second state title in the program’s history and further establishing Sankofa Freedom Academy as a powerhouse in Philadelphia basketball; and

WHEREAS, The Warriors have not only excelled as athletes but have served as ambassadors for their school and the Kensington community, demonstrating that through collective effort and a shared vision, greatness is achieved; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and congratulates the Sankofa Freedom Academy Boys’ Basketball Team for their 2026 PIAA Class 1A State Championship victory. We commend the players, coaching staff, faculty, and the entire "Sankofa Family" for their commitment to excellence and for bringing this prestigious title home to Philadelphia.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to the Sankofa Freedom Academy Boys’ Basketball Team, along with its coaches and school leadership, as a token of the City’s recognition of their outstanding achievement, unwavering dedication, and for serving as an inspiration to young people throughout Philadelphia.
