WHEREAS, The Council of the City of Philadelphia recognizes that strong school communities are built not only through classroom instruction, but also through coaches, mentors, and leaders who help young people develop discipline, confidence, resilience, and a sense of purpose both inside and outside of school; and

WHEREAS, Shakir “Shock” Johnson is a proud graduate of Olney High School and has devoted himself to investing in the same community that helped shape him, serving for 10 years as a coach at Olney High School, including 5 years as Assistant Coach and 5 years as Head Boys Basketball Coach, while mentoring countless student-athletes with care, accountability, and encouragement; and

WHEREAS, In addition to his work on the court, Shakir Johnson has gone above and beyond to support his players, personally providing basketball sneakers and team gear to ensure that student-athletes feel supported and take pride in representing the Olney Trojan community; and

WHEREAS, As Executive Vice President of Programs, Athletics, and Teen Advancement for the Boys & Girls Club of Philadelphia, where he has dedicated 14 years of service, Shakir Johnson has expanded meaningful opportunities and pathways for young people, including supporting the establishment of a Boys & Girls Club at Olney High School that now serves more than 100 active members through its after-school program; and

WHEREAS, Through his leadership and deep investment in youth success, Shakir Johnson has connected students to employment opportunities, supported job readiness initiatives

,

and helped advance post-secondary pathways, including trade-based programming, while also serving as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and trusted advocate for the Olney community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and recognizes Shakir Johnson for his dedicated service, leadership, and positive impact as Head Boys Basketball Coach at Olney High School and as a champion for youth opportunity in the Ninth Councilmanic District, and expresses the sincere admiration and appreciation of this legislative body for his commitment to the students, families, and communities he serves

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to Shakir Johnson as an expression of the admiration and respect of this legislative body for his outstanding work and dedication to empowering Philadelphia’s youth.
