WHEREAS, The Council of the City of Philadelphia recognizes that strong school communities are built not only through classroom instruction, but also through coaches, mentors, and leaders who help young people develop discipline, confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging; and

WHEREAS, Jamel Lindsey, known to many as “Mel,” is the Head Coach of the Boys’ Basketball Team at Samuel Fels High School and a proud alumnus of the program, having graduated in 1995, and his return to lead his alma mater reflects a full-circle commitment to investing in the same school community that helped shape him; and

WHEREAS, A longtime presence in Philadelphia basketball and the City’s Public League, Jamel Lindsey previously coached at Abraham Lincoln High School before returning to Samuel Fels High School, where he guided the program to competitive success, including a run to its first Public League championship appearance; and

WHEREAS, Over the past four years, Jamel Lindsey has served the Fels community far beyond the basketball court, helping bridge the gap between the school and surrounding community by hosting parent meetings, facilitating student engagement, and convening community conversations to resolve conflicts and foster open communication; and

WHEREAS, Through his leadership, mentorship, and deep personal investment in students, Jamel Lindsey has become a trusted pillar of the Fels community, reaching young people who are often hardest to engage, instilling hope, teaching life skills beyond school rules, and strengthening a sense of belonging among students, families, and the broader community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and recognizes Jamel Lindsey for his dedicated service, leadership, and positive impact as Head Coach of the Boys’ Basketball Team at Samuel Fels High School, and as a champion for youth development in the Ninth Councilmanic District, and expresses the sincere admiration and appreciation of this legislative body for his commitment to the students, families, and community he serves.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to Jamel Lindsey as an

expression of the admiration and respect of this legislative body for his outstanding work and dedication to empowering Philadelphia’s youth.
