WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia recognizes that birds are indicators of environmental health and pledges to provide resources for their protection and sustainability; and

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Audubon Council, owner of the “Bird Town” and “Bird Town Pennsylvania” service and design marks and offeror of the Bird Town Pennsylvania programs and services, works with municipalities to engage and educate residents, schools, and businesses about conservation actions that create a healthier, more sustainable environment for birds, wildlife, and people; and

WHEREAS, These programs and services are powerful tools to increase green living, promote a culture of conservation, and provide positive social, economic, and ecological outcomes for all members of the community; and

WHEREAS, Using native plants, reducing stormwater runoff, mitigating light pollution, and reducing energy use can help restore natural systems and ecological integrity; and

WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia has demonstrated its commitment to bird conservation through planned and ongoing initiatives including: the installation of Chimney Swift towers and identification of neglected green spaces for invasive plant control to create and protect habitat; collaboration with bird-safe initiatives to reduce bird collisions with glass and promotion of lights-out programs to address light pollution; educational programming, including workshops for youth, partnerships with schools, and integration of arts and nature to foster community engagement; and promotion of sustainable practices such as walking, biking, and public transit to reduce environmental impact; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby commits to engaging in efforts to live more sustainably and provide a healthier environment for both residents and birds, affirms its commitment to partnering with community organizations, residents, and regional initiatives to promote conservation actions that create a healthier, more sustainable environment for birds, wildlife, and people, and seeks recognition as a Bird Town Pennsylvania community.
