Full Bill

WHEREAS, Stephen Colbert, an acclaimed comedian, writer, producer, and television host, has dedicated decades of his career to informing, entertaining, and challenging audiences through satire, intellect, and wit; and

WHEREAS, Through his groundbreaking work on The Colbert Report and later as host of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he redefined political comedy and elevated late-night television into a platform for meaningful civic dialogue; and

WHEREAS, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert premiered in 2015 and, over the course of more than a decade on air, has provided nightly commentary, interviews, and cultural reflection, becoming one of the most influential programs in late-night television; and

WHEREAS, Colbert’s work has consistently demonstrated that freedom of speech is the cornerstone of democracy, using humor as both shield and spotlight to illuminate issues of national importance; and

WHEREAS, His ability to blend humor with insight reflects the understanding that comedy often masks ugly truths, offering audiences a way to confront difficult realities through laughter and reflection; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Stephen Colbert has exemplified that the courage to speak truth to power is a true sign of character, holding leaders and institutions accountable while encouraging civic engagement; and

WHEREAS, His influence extends beyond entertainment, shaping public discourse, inspiring a new generation of writers and performers, and reinforcing the importance of a free and independent press; and

WHEREAS, On May 21, 2026, the conclusion of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert marks the end of a significant chapter in American cultural and political life, worthy of recognition and appreciation; and

WHEREAS, On behalf of a grateful City, Philadelphia encourages other cities to follow suit in recognizing the profound impact of Stephen Colbert’s work and legacy; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and celebrates Stephen Colbert for his extraordinary career, lasting contributions to comedy and journalism, and his unwavering commitment to truth, integrity, and democratic values; and

FUTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution will be presented to Stephen Colbert as an expression of the sincere respect and admiration of the Council of the City of Philadelphia.
