Full Bill
WHEREAS, Every May since 1949, communities across the country have observed Mental Health Awareness Month to talk openly about mental health, reduce stigma, and support people in recovery; and
WHEREAS, Mental health is fundamental to overall health, encompassing emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing, and shaping how individuals think, feel, act, relate to others, and navigate the demands of daily life; and
WHEREAS, Stigma continues to be a primary barrier to seeking and sustaining mental health care, particularly among men, older adults, immigrant communities, communities of color, and LGBTQ+ Philadelphians, where cultural, linguistic, and historical factors shape engagement with care; and
WHEREAS, The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), through its Philadelphia affiliate, provides free education, support groups, and advocacy for individuals and families affected by mental illness, and has been a steadfast partner in reducing stigma and expanding access to care across our City; and
WHEREAS, Mental health belongs to all of us, and caring for one another at home, at work, in schools, and in our neighborhoods is how a healthy City is built; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby recognizes May 2026 as Mental Health Awareness Month, thanks NAMI, the workers, providers, and people in recovery who sustain Philadelphia's behavioral health system, and reminds every resident that help is available twenty-four hours a day by calling or texting 988.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) as a sign of the gratitude and respect of this legislative body.
