WHEREAS, Born in 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, Coltrane’s early life was marked by loss and transition. After graduating high school, Coltrane followed his mother, aunt and cousin who had migrated to Philadelphia a year prior in the mid-1940s. Following his time in the military, Coltrane settled his family into their new home on 1511 N 33rd Street; and
WHEREAS, It was his formative years in Philadelphia that proved decisive, grounding him in a vibrant Black musical community that would shape both his discipline and his expansive artistic vision. Philadelphia’s jazz scene was rigorous, competitive, and deeply communal. Musicians gathered in clubs, rehearsal spaces, and private homes, pushing one another technically and artistically; and
WHEREAS, Coltrane crafted his perfection in Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion. Philadelphia was where Coltrane began to understand music as a vehicle for spiritual exploration. The city’s diverse religious groups and their emphasis on discipline contributed to his sense that music could transcend entertainment and become a form of devotion. This would later define the foundation of landmark works like A Love Supreme; and
WHEREAS, Through the work of John Coltrane House, Coltrane’s Philadelphia residence continues to be preserved. Coltrane House continues to be an open source of education about the City’s musical history and talent; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA Hereby recognizes September 23rd as “John Coltrane Day” in the City of Philadelphia in concert with The John Coltrane Symposium, John Coltrane House, and Coltrane100, honoring the life, legacy, and centennial of jazz legend John Coltrane.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution will be presented to John Coltrane House as a sincere expression of the City Council of Philadelphia’s gratitude and admiration.
