This enacted ordinance amends Philadelphia’s rules for areaways, which are spaces extending under or beside sidewalks. It allows an areaway to extend beyond the street line as far as needed to meet the requirements of the applicable utility provider, while retaining requirements for a building permit and fixed iron grates.

Amending Title 11 of The Philadelphia Code, entitled "Streets," by amending Chapter 11-600, entitled "Construction, Encroachments And Projections Over, On And Under Streets," by amending Section 11-608, entitled "Excavation and Construction In and Under the Sidewalks," by providing that areaway encroachments may extend into the street line as far as may be required by the applicable utility provider.
